Change starts with imagination. A dazzling vegetated swale transforms a classic suburban lot, previously dominated by lawn, into a vibrant and colorful centerpiece of the neighborhood. Gold finches, hummingbirds, and numerous butterflies are drawn to the combination of Joe Pye weed, black-eyed susans, cardinal flower, butterflyweed, golden rod, iris and Virgina switchgrass. The diversity of native plants not only provides excellent wildlife habitat, but also slows down and cleans stormwater that would typically would flow unchecked into the Potomac River
Lush plant materials and distinctive stonework compliment the bold
architecture of Mark McInturff. Organic shapes and overflowing textures
heighten the overall experience. Environmentally, the pervious patio of
granite resolves an historic issue with drainage and the high use of native
plants encourages a new community of pollinators to congregate.
